Filled with the Spirit of Love: A Pentecost Food Drive for Catholic Charities will begin on Pentecost Sunday, May 10/11, and continue through Sunday, May 25, 2008.
Summertime is a time of higher needs and lower contributions for agencies that serve the needy, particularly with higher food prices this year. Please help if you are able, by bringing 1 or 2 grocery bags filled with regular sized items that you would buy for your family to Mass the next two weekends. Please keep glass containers to a minimum.
Donations prior to May 24 may be left in the gathering space by the sign. The weekend of May 24/25, pull up to the flatbed truck at the south edge of the parking lot to unload the bags. (For tax documentation of your contribution, staple the grocery receipt for these items to this page and file it in your tax folder). The suggested items focus on nutritious non-perishable food. Items that are high priorities throughout the year are as follows:
Sugar 2 lbs.
Soup (canned or dry)
Dry Cereal
Rice (2 or 3 lb bags)
Oatmeal
Canned Stew
Tomato sauce
Jelly any kind
Hamburger Helper
Jell-O and pudding
Diapers (all sizes)
Toilet paper small pkg.
Spaghetti Sauce
Pasta/Spaghetti, shells, etc.
Canned meat/spam, tuna, etc.
Macaroni and cheese
Peanut butter
Cooking oil
Canned vegetables
Beans (canned and dry)
Dried mashed potatoes
Milk (canned or dried)
Canned fruit (all types)During these two weeks we also ask that you keep our brothers and sisters who are poor in Spirit—depressed, lonely, alienated from the Church—as well as those who are poor in material things, in your daily prayers. Questions? Call the parish office at 788-5525 or Davi at 788-4234. God bless you!

Go green! Be good to the environment and to our parish by donating your empty aluminum cans! Please make sure that they are in plastic bags due to weather conditions, and out of kindness for our volunteers who take them to the recycler! Place your bags of cans behind the fence to the east of the canopy entrance at the school. Thanks! – St Mary School Staff
Congratulations to all the First Communicants last weekend!
Thank you to everyone who gave Holly Clark of LPI, our bulletin publisher, the courtesy of your time last week. Ad revenue makes the bulletin possible at no cost to the parish! For information on placing an ad, contact Holly, 913-999-9389 or hclark@4LPi.com. Thanks for your support!
Thank you to all Girl Scout Troops of St Mary who hosted the Senior Citizen Bingo Friday night. It was a fun event for all!
Church directories are arriving this month! All families who submitted photos will receive a directory at no cost. Directories will be available for purchase at $10 each. Funds will go to the building fund.
Ray and Sue Bitel made a $1,200 contribution to the building fund last week, in the form of a memorial to his parents, Vincient & Amelia Bitel. The Bitels were able to make the gift from the tax rebates the federal government is beginning to distribute, and encourage other families to do the same. Ray said, “This would be a wonderful way for families to make our building fund grow! Now is the perfect time for us to donate since we had a nice tax refund/rebate coming our way. It’s a huge benefit for our parish to back this building program as much as possible because future generations need our support, just as previous generations provided for us by building the original church. Although you can ‘save’ at Wal-Mart, I can’t think of a better place than St. Mary Parish to give and help Jesus ‘save’ yourself and others!”
Volunteers are needed from our parish to serve at The Lord's Diner. You will only need to give 2-3 hours of your time once every three months. Please prayerfully consider giving your gift of time, and then give Vicky a call at the parish office, 788-5525. Thank you! Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me.
Looking for the perfect teacher’s gift?
If you were planning to gift a creepy crawly creature from Tails & Scales, giving a SCRIP gift card might be more appreciated. That way, Ms Nelly can select what SHE would like, whether it be a pampering item from Bath & Body Works, a tasty treat from Blackberry Lane, a live whatcha-ma-call-it OF HER CHOICE from Tails & Scales or a cherished item from one of the many other SCRIP merchants. She’s sure to find that desired item with any merchant you select.A large variety of gift cards are available at the Scrip table (in the hallway or Knights Hall) after 5 pm, 9 am or 6 pm Mass, or before 11 am Mass. By making the little extra effort to buy Scrip cards, your purchase earns money for St Mary! Questions or need some great suggestions? Call Jessica, 788-2994 or Lisa, 789-9132.
Pretty honorarium and memorial cards for Mother's Day and Father's Day are in the basket on the table in the gathering space. A memorial or honorarium gift is a wonderful way to say thank you to someone special and to God for all his good gifts, while also providing the gift of faith for future generations! Just fill out an envelope there and use one of the cards in the boxes or the parish staff will send a card for you. Not sure what an honorarium or memorial is? Call Andrea, 788-5525. She’ll be happy to explain and answer any questions you might have.
Dads can use Dillon’s reloadable cards too! One might think there would be a “for woman use only” line on the Dillon’s cards. But dad can use them too, especially when purchasing ingredients for the meal he’s cooking for mom on Mother’s Day! WOW! We got a check on Friday for $1,855 from $37,103 in Dillon’s reloads by 162 users (women AND men) in March. Our numbers continue to go up! Thank you to Dillon’s for offering this partnership and to everyone who is using their Dillon’s reloadable cards! Since January our total (including this check) is $7,808. That’s pretty remarkable! Buy a $5 gift card for $5, and St Mary receives 5% of that $5 and every dollar you add to it. You can use it to buy groceries, gas, and prescriptions as you usually would. You spend nothing extra, but a little time! If you haven’t tried the Dillon’s reloadable cards yet or don’t understand how they work, stop by the Scrip table in the hallway and ask, or call Jessica, 788-2994 or Lisa, 789-9132!

Please remember to clip and save General Mills Box Tops for Education! Each little pink box top you cut out is worth 10 cents, and last year we earned almost $1,700 in box tops! Drop them off at the school (preferred) or parish office. Questions about the program? Please call Jessica, 788-2994, or visit www.boxtops4education.com.

Faith Formation & Academic Excellence
If you're evaluating preschools, grade schools or middle schools, check out St Mary Parish School and Preschool! Our academics are excellent and incorporate our Catholic faith. Middle school students participate in band, athletics, academic competitions, and drama. Preschool offers introduction to letters and sounds, counting, developing fine motor skills, playtime, and the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Atrium. This hands-on religion room is now offered to St Mary children from three years of age through first grade. Second grade will be added next fall. If growing in love of God and family while developing socially and preparing for future academic success are your top priorities for your child, St. Mary is a great choice! Call the school office, 788-3151, to schedule a visit!
Rusty Eck’s Adopt-A-School Drawing is May 31. Donate $10 to benefit St Mary School and get a ticket for a chance to win a new car or truck – your choice up to $25,000 MSRP on any Ford, Lincoln, Mercury or Toyota! While you are under no obligation to make a donation, it is respectfully requested that you make a donation of $10 per ticket. Contact Melissa Igo, 788-5744, for a ticket.
Vacation Bible School (VBS) registration is underway! VBS is June 9-13, from 9 am–noon daily. Parents may register children who will be 4 years old through grade 4 in the 2008-09 school year for this fun week of scripture study, song, crafts, games, food and lots of fun. This year’s VBS is Son World Adventure Park, A Thrilling Ride With Jesus. Children will meet various people who encountered Jesus and discover how they responded to him. At Son World Adventure Park, there is no height requirement, lines are short and everyone gets a good view of the parade. The final day to register is May 22. Registration forms are available in the gathering space of the church and in the school office.
Many volunteers are needed to work in many different ways during Vacation Bible School. If you are an adult or youth older than 12, please complete the Volunteer Form available in the gathering space or contact Ann Hughes, 788-1877 or ahughes@stmarysderby.com.
Class Assignments: With our expansion to two classrooms per grade, parents often ask how class selections are made and whether they can choose their child’s teacher. At the end of the year, teachers meet and group the students, trying to balance learning styles, behavior, numbers, etc. as evenly as possible. This process actually takes several hours, sometimes days to complete. Then we notify parents in August as to which classroom the child should report. Unfortunately, in order to keep the numbers balanced, and low, in each room, we cannot honor requests. Sometimes the classes stay close to the same as the year before, sometimes they are mixed. Each child’s individual learning interest is considered as placement is made.
Awards Assembly: A list of names of students and the awards will be posted on the school website at www.stmarysderby.com/school/awards.html by Wednesday, May 14. Check this list to see if your child is receiving an award.
Cast Party: Several parents have asked to have a cast party for “The Wizard of Oz” and some of the teachers have asked to see the DVD (thank you Mr. Chvilicek!!!) with their students. We will do both for the students and teachers on the afternoon of Monday, May 19. Thank you to the parents who are providing the snacks. Seeing the DVD is optional for the teachers, so some of the students may only be able to see part of it. Regardless, it gives us a chance to tell them what a wonderful job they did.

I remember back when I was a teacher's aide and on recess duty one sunny day. I stood there rubbing my tummy waiting on the arrival of my son Matt and watching over my charges on the playground. I told the children that played in the sand at my feet to go, play on the equipment, run, and go have fun. “No” they protested, “we want to stay here!” How sweet I thought, they want to be near me. One small one, brushed the hair out of her eyes, handed me a “floral bouquet” of dandelions and said, “You're the only shade on the playground.” I looked up and the oak tree was only a large twig with sporadic leaves. And yes, I was putting out more shade then the tree. I walked out to the playground the other day and looked up at what now is a huge oak tree. The tree grows rings each year; I grow memories and learning experiences. We both have grown both a little nuts at times; we both spread our branches and again I am spreading mine.
After 16 years here I am saying goodbye to being part of the school staff and focusing more directly on Parish work. This is something we have been headed for this year and unfortunately I have not been able to dedicate enough time toward. I hope to continue to see many of you at Faith in Action tours and look forward to sharing some other opportunities with you in the near future. God is working and sometimes it is hard for us to listen and follow, but I truly believe working in this new capacity is where he wants me to be.
May God continue to guide all of us on our journeys – Gail Schmeidler
