Welcome to the Alphabetic Phonics Program. I hope you had a wonderful summer. I am looking forward to having your child in my class this year. The first day of class will be Monday August 25,08. Classes will be held Monday through Thursday in the Annex basement. Enclosed is an example of what each lesson plan consists of in Alphabetic Phonics. Check with your child to determine what time he or she will be in class.
Each lesson in the Alphabetic Phonics Program consists of:
•Alphabet – alphabetizing and dictionary skills
•Reading decks – letters and sound cards are practiced
•Spelling deck – letter sounds already taught for spelling are practiced
•New Learning – new letters, digraphs, trigraphs, spelling rules, grammar concepts, and comprehension skills are taught during this time
•Reading practice – oral reading is practiced
•Handwriting practice – cursive writing is taught and practiced
•Spelling practice – spelling ten words consisting of the letters and sounds that have already been taught during new learning
•Verbal Expression – verbal organization skills are practiced moving as quickly as possible to written expression
First Class, Book 1A, First Grade
Look at what will be taught during the month of September 09. I will be testing the students to see their progress throughout the school year in reading and comprehension. I teach them for 30 minutes Monday-Thursday. We are only able to complete about one to one and a half lessons each week. Alphabet: Alphabetizing to the first and second letter and continuing with dictionary skills to develop techniques for looking up words quickly in the dictionary.
New Learning: We will be learning the letters and spelling words with short (i), (t), (p) and (n). We will be reading words with these letters only.
Handwriting: We will be learning the cursive handwriting on the letter we learn in new learning.
Reading: Practice reading and coding words that have been taught during new learning.
Spelling: At the beginning of the program we will be practicing hearing the sounds that are in various words in order to help their phonological awareness skills. Toward the end of this first book we will be writing the spelling words on paper.
Verbal Expressing: We will continue to practice parts of speech like articles, nouns, pronouns, and verbs by coding the different parts of speech in sentences. We are practicing skills in comprehension by identifying the topic sentences and main ideas of various stories.
At the end of each month your child will be bring home all the papers that they have completed that month. Please send the envelope back to school empty the next day of class for a prize.
Each class starts with prayer.
Multisensory Reading and Spelling Letter September 09
We have started the third book on the Multisensory Reading and Spelling Program (M.R.S.). Each lesson in the Multisensory Reading and Spelling Program consists of:
• Visual Deck – naming the letter and saying the key word and sound
• Auditory Deck – students echo the sounds and writes the letter(s) that represent that sound
• Visual Review – students read a list of words which illustrate a pattern or rule taught in the previous lesson
• Auditory Review – students repeat dictated words and isolate sounds to spell or identify checkpoints for applying a pattern or rule
• Spelling Review – students spell seven words (6 real words and 1 nonsense) that illustrate the spelling concept taught in the previous lesson
• New Material – discovery teaching and multisensory techniques are used to present kinds of syllables, syllable division patterns, spelling rules and patterns. We have started Book 3 and are on Lesson 28; there are 24 lessons all together in Book 2. The lessons start from 51-75. We will be covering VCCCV pattern words learning the rules for the spelling of long vowels that are the (ay), (y), (ow), (ue), (ee) and (y) spelling rule for two syllable words. We will be learning the Rabbit Spelling Rule, (ou)=ou final ow, spelling of plurals with (y) and suffixes y and ly spelling rules.
• Visual Practice of New Material – students read lists of words which illustrate the newly presented materials
• Auditory Practice of New Material – students repeat dictated words which illustrate the new material
• Spelling Practice of New Material – students spell seven words (6 real words and 1 nonsense) which illustrate the new material
• Review – the newly learned material is briefly restated by the student
It takes two to three days to complete a lesson.
This month we will be learning one verse and saying it from memory each Thursday. The verses that will be taught this month are Psalms 139:14,I John 4:10, John 15:13, Romans 5:8 and Romans 8:32. Each class starts with prayer.
At the end or beginning of each month students will be bringing home an envelope with all the papers they have completed in class for that month and information on what will be taught in the program for the next month. Please have your child return the empty envelope the next day of class.
3rd-Class Book IIA 2nd. - 3rd.Grade
Look at what will be taught during the month of September 09. I will be testing the students throughout the school year in order to see their progress in reading and comprehension. We are in Book IIA Lesson 22. Book IIA consist of lessons 18-47.
Alphabet: Alphabetizing to the first and second letter and continuing with dictionary skills to develop techniques for looking up words quickly in the dictionary.
New Learning: We will be learning the letters and spelling words with (k), n=(ng), c=(k) and final ck=(k). We will be learning how to spell words that do not go along with the spelling rules.
Handwriting: Continue practicing cursive and copying procedures to develop skills for taking notes in class.
Reading: Practice reading and coding words that have been taught during new learning.
Spelling: At the beginning of the program we will be practicing hearing the sounds that are in various words. Toward the end of the book we will be spelling ten words each lesson relying on the concepts and spelling rules that have been taught during new learning.
Verbal Expressing: We will continue to practice parts of speech like articles, nouns, pronouns, and verbs by coding the different parts of speech in sentences. We are practicing skills in comprehension by identifying the topic sentences and main ideas of various stories.

Alphabet: Alphabetizing to the first and second letters and continuing with dictionary skills to develop techniques for looking up words quickly in the dictionary.
New Learning: We will be learning the sounds and spelling of final (k) spelling, unvoiced diagraph (th) and voiced (th), short (e) and suffix ness.
Handwriting: Continue practicing cursive and copying procedures to develop skills for taking notes in class.
Reading: Practice reading and coding words that have been taught during new learning.
Spelling: Continue spelling ten words each lesson relying on the concepts and spelling rules that have been taught during new learning.

Look at what will be taught during the month of September 09. Each lesson takes approximately two days to complete. We will be testing throughout the year in reading and comprehension to observe their progress. We are in Book IIA lesson 36. Book IIA consist of lessons 18-47.
Alphabet: Alphabetizing to the second letters and third letters and continuing with dictionary skills to develop techniques for looking up words quickly in the dictionary. New Learning: We will be learning the sounds and spelling initial (k), adjectives, voiced digraph (th) and unvioce digraph (th) short (e) and suffix ness.
Handwriting: Continue practicing cursive and copying procedures to develop skills for taking notes in class.
Reading: Practice reading and coding words that have been taught during new learning.
Spelling: Continue spelling ten words each lesson relying on the concepts and spelling rules that have been taught during new learning.

We will be learning open and closed syllables, the short sounds of the vowels, dividing words with VCCV patterns, the initial and medial (k)=c, k spelling rules. Some of the materials are a review of last year but the program goes much faster.
