Multisensory Reading and Spelling Letter March & April 2008

This is what we will be learning during March & April. Because of spring break and State Assessments we will not be able to complete as many lessons, so I am combining the two months of lessons in this News Letter. Each lesson in the Multisensory Reading and Spelling Program consists of:

• Visual Deck – naming the letter and saying the key word and sound
• Auditory Deck – students echo the sounds and writes the letter(s) that represent that sound
• Visual Review – students read a list of words which illustrate a pattern or rule taught in the previous lesson
• Auditory Review – students repeat dictated words and isolate sounds to spell or identify checkpoints for applying a pattern or rule
• Spelling Review – students spell seven words (6 real words and 1 nonsense) that illustrate the spelling concept taught in the previous lesson
• New Material – discovery teaching and multisensory techniques are used to present kinds of syllables, syllable division patterns, spelling rules and patterns. We are on Lesson 21; there are 25 lessons all together in Book 1. The lessons left are Ango-Saxon vowel suffixes, homophones, Anglo-Saxon “old, kind, child” words and taking the Benchmark Post-test.
• Visual Practice of New Material – students read lists of words which illustrate the newly presented materials
• Auditory Practice of New Material – students repeat dictated words which illustrate the new material
• Spelling Practice of New Material – students spell seven words (6 real words and 1 nonsense) which illustrate the new material
• Review – the newly learned material is briefly restated by the student

It takes two to three days to complete a lesson.

This month we will be learning one verse each week. The verses are I Corinthians 13: 4-13, “What is Love”. Each class starts with prayer.

At the end or beginning of each month students will be bringing home an envelope with all the papers they have completed in class for that month and information on what will be taught in the program for the next month. Please have your child return the empty envelope the next day of class.

If you have any questions e-mail me at dunruh@stmarysderby.com or call me at St. Mary’s school or at home 788-8321.

Scientific Spelling Program

Scientific Spelling is a system by which students can learn to spell words they do not know by using the reliable patterns and rules of the English language. Students learn to analyze words and group them for ease in learning. They learn to analyze and categorize words according to three types: regular, rule and irregular spellings.

What is the goal of Scientific Spelling Program?

•  Students will learn the reliable patterns and rules of the English language.

•  Students will learn and will apply a multisensory strategy, which will lead to permanent memorization of words that do not follow the patterns or rules.

•  Students will learn to analyze word as regular, rule or irregular words.

•  Students will learn skills for taking notes such as dictation.

The lessons we have covered in September is the Floss Rule , v and ve, the initial and medial spelling of c and k , final spelling of ck and c , and final spelling of k and ke .

In October we will be learning the Double Rule , ch and tch spelling, Rabbit Rule and long a spelling in the final position, a-consonant-e (a-e), a , and ay spelling rules.

Reading Naturally Program

The Reading Naturally Program incorporates teaching modeling, repeated reading and progress monitoring into a single set of steps to improve fluency and comprehension.

•  Students read along while listening to a recording of a high interest story.

•  Students practice reading the story until they can read it at a predetermined goal rate.

•  Student graph the number of words read correctly before practicing and then again after practicing. The graph provides proof of the student's progress.

•  Students are given comprehension question before and after testing to show their progress in comprehension.

We will be doing the Reading Naturally Program during the first 15 minutes of class. They will be reading story according to their reading level.

At the end of the month they will be sending their papers home in an envelope. Please send the envelope back to class the next day of Scientific Spelling.
