Welcome to fifth grade!

I am very excited to start this school year. It is my goal that we will all work together to create a learning environment that we can all enjoy. I am looking forward to all the new things we will learn and the fun we will have while doing it!

Mass Servers: Students will train to serve during Mass. They will serve all of the Monday and Tuesday masses. Fifth graders are to actively participate in mass. Occasionally, students will be quizzed over the homily.

Bullying Action Plan: All students are required to have read and signed the bully action plan that went home with everyone on open house night. St. Mary’s Catholic School will not tolerate any bullying. Our goal is to create a safe environment for all. I have a box on my desk for the students to privately place comments, thoughts, and concerns. I will review the notes and handle them as I see fit.

School Uniform: All uniform attire will be enforced as stated in the handbook.

Safety Patrol: A note has been sent home detailing your child’s schedule patrol duty. Students are responsible for finding their own substitute if they are unable to do their scheduled time.

Assignments: All assignments are posted on the board everyday. Students are to write their assignments in their agenda books if it is to be taken home for homework. An assignment is only homework if they did not get it finished during allotted class time. Any late assignment will receive and additional ten percent off of the total grade for everyday that it is late. If an assignment is missing for three or more days the student will be asked to call home. We grade our papers as a class; this way student can immediately see what they missed and can ask questions. I will allow student to re-do to their assignments if they score below a 69%.

Reports: Our research reports will be the same as Mrs. McGovern’s class. Will be doing a report on “Christmas Around the World” and a report on the rain forest or ocean life.

Birthdays: Please notify me prior to bringing treats for your son's or daughter's birthday; this way we can set up an appropriate time. If your child has a summer birthday we will be celebrating their half birthday. Example: If their birthday is 8/7/99 we will be celebrating it on 2/7/10. I would appreciate easy treats to pass out to the kids-Nothing messy or too difficult for a child to pass to another child. If you choose to bring a drink please make sure it comes with a lid (Capri sun is okay too). There must be enough treats for the entire class. We have 17 students this year.

Scholastic Book orders: I will be ordering from Scholastic book clubs. Please write your check payable to Scholastic book club. Cash is also accepted.

Thank you for trusting me with your most precious gift from God this year. I am excited to help nurture their spiritual and academic growth. As a parent, I understand the unique bond between a parent and child. You know your child the best; please do not hesitate to share comments and concerns with me. In return I will be in contact with you throughout the school year. I am excited to start the year and look forward to meeting with you.
