Literature and Composition,
grades 6-8

Literature:

6th grade is beginning to read the play The Miracle Worker, a story about Helen Keller and her teacher Annie Sullivan. We will be reading it aloud with students either volunteering to read or teacher-assigned reading. In preparation for reading, the students have been exposed to Braille and sign language.

7th grade will read Hatchet, a story about a young boy alone in the Canadian wilderness. Hopefully, we will begin the novel before Thanksgiving.

8th grade will begin The Giver, a 1994 Newberry Award novel, about a futuristic society. It is a science fiction story that should allow much discussion and possible debate.

Composition:

  • 6th graders are developing diagramming skills
  • 7th graders are honing their diagramming skills
  • 8th graders are reviewing all phrases, focusing primarily on verbal phrases. All classes are preparing a final product for the DAR essay contest.
