Mrs. Shearrer

April 2008
March sure did go by fast! It’s hard to believe we are down to the last month and a half of school. We still have so much to do! I hope everyone had a relaxing spring break and a blessed Easter!
First, I would like to share with you some of the fun things we did during the month of March. The first week, we celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday. On Monday, we read The Cat in the Hat. Then, Monica taught us how to make a Cat in the Hat treat out of ice cream. Yum! On Wednesday, we read One Fish Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish and we went to kindergarten! We got to meet Mrs. Fanning and see her classroom. She taught us about sea turtles. We even got to make one! On Friday, we read Green Eggs and Ham. We even got to make them ourselves and try them out! Since it was a Friday during Lent though, we left the ham out.
The next week that we were in school was Holy Week. In order for us to learn about the Last Supper, we acted it out. First, we decorated the table as if we were having a very special meal. Mrs. Shearrer pretended to be Jesus and pretended to wash our feet. We learned that was not Jesus’ job but He did it anyway since He wanted his friends to know how much He loved them. Next we used pita bread and grape juice to act out the meal. Mrs. Shearrer said she was very proud of us when we figured out that our cup we were using was the chalice and our plate was the paten. We were very excited when we realized that we see this meal every week at church! We also learned on Wednesday, why Good Friday and Easter are so very important. We made our own clay, shaped it into Jesus’ tomb and baked it. After it had cooled, we painted it. We made this to remind us that Jesus rose from the dead and lives among us!
After Easter, we came back to learn about farms. The fieldtrip to the dairy farm was a lot of fun. We saw the farmer milk the cow, we fed the babies, fed the big cows, went on a wagon ride, played on their very fun playground and got to have ice cream. Sometimes, I don’t know who enjoys it more, the adults or the children as it is a very interesting fieldtrip for adults too!
April looks to be very busy as well. For starters, we will not have class on Friday, April 11 or Friday April 18th. The 11th is a faculty inservice and the 18th is being replaced with Christmas in April on the 17th.
During the 1st week of April we are learning about plants. We will plant some flower seeds and watch them grow. We also learned that oranges come from plants. We squeezed oranges and made our own juice. It was so good!
Sunday, April 13th is our Kindergarten meeting and prescreening at 1:00pm. If you plan to send your child to kindergarten next year or just are not sure, you need to attend. This is a good time to bring any questions that you may have with you.
During the week of April 14th we will celebrate Early Childhood week. On Tuesday the 15th from 6:30-8:00pm we will have our re-scheduled Family Math Night. This is for the preschoolers and their parents only. Please come and enjoy a night with your child. Wednesday, the 16th brings us to Donuts For Dad. It is held in the annex, the room next to the preschool, from 7:30-8:30 am. Please stop in and have a donut and some juice. What a fun way to start off your day! Thursday, the 17th is Christmas in April. We will several stations set up to travel around to and a special visitor from the North Pole. This event is from 9-10:45 am and takes the place of Friday afternoon’s class. It is not required that you stay with your child but we would like you to if it is possible. Any extra hands that day would be greatly appreciated.
On Monday, April 28th we will be going to the zoo. To get a full day in, we will meet at the preschool at 10:30am. That way we will get to the zoo around 11 and have until 2:30. Your child needs to bring a sack lunch that day. If anyone would like to volunteer to bring juice boxes or something to drink before we head home, please let me know. We will also be attending a program about animals while we are there. The cost will be $4 a person unless you have a zoo membership. If you have a membership, all you have to do is give me the membership number. The permission slip will come out shortly.
On May 5th, we will have Letter People Day. For this day, each child will pick a letter and make a t-shirt (at home) to wear that day. You can decorate your shirt anyway that you would like. You do need to have your letter on it and you can also attach or paint things on it that start with their letter. They will also need to bring a snack for 9 that day that begins with the letter they have chosen. I will send home a note about this next week along with setting out a sign up sheet for the letters. Be thinking now which letter you would like.
Well, I think that wraps it up for now. As always check your child’s folder for additional notes on the many activities coming up. Have a happy spring!
