Catholic schools have a long-standing reputation for academic excellence. I expect the students to be as well prepared in the core subject areas as his/her abilities allow. Our goal is to help lead the students to Christ. All academic study, all social events, all athletic participation all that we do will be connected to this very simple goal.
The test scores our parish school children have been able to maintain are as good as or better than any in the area and are improving each year. The state-mandated tests are required of all schools and test in areas such as Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies and Writing.
Any child who qualifies for special needs services, such as gifted or learning disabilities can receive those services through Derby public school and still attend St. Mary's. Because of new state policies this year, a student who is out of district (Rose Hill, Mulvane), can still receive services through the Derby public schools. For those students who need special assistance in language arts, we offer Alphabetic Phonics, Read Naturally, and Scientific Spelling. We are in the beginning stages of trying to offer our own gifted program.
Students have opportunities in athletics in fall, winter and spring. Art classes are regularly offered in the curriculum for K-5. In addition with the standard music curriculum, St. Mary's offers band and students have music opportunities for outside the classroom such as the diocesan music festival and KMEA choir.
I consider it a tremendous privilege to serve our parish as principal of our school. I would like to extend an invitation to all parishioners, whether you have children in the school or not, to come volunteer and be a part of our parish school. To volunteer contact Vicky Tully or call 788-3151.
